A great quote by Steve Jobs. A quote that can pertain to so many things. Speaking of jobs, the labor market is tighter than it's been in decades. In a candidate driven market, those who've been hankering for something more in the workplace, now is your time. 

What does this mean for companies looking to hire new talent? Companies need to consider that it's a candidate driven market while looking to hire (and retain) talent. While publishing job descriptions and considering candidates, keep in mind that candidates are considering what your company can do for them and considering far beyond just whether they fit the job requirements. 

A report published by the International Public Management for Human Resources (IPMA-HR) shares some statistics regarding what each generation looks for in a workplace:

  • Approximately 55% of millennials and 47% of Gen-Xers reported the hiring process to be too lengthy
  • Millennials look for opportunities to advance and for leadership programs, while Baby Boomers and Gen-Xers were more likely to look for health benefits or pensions as a top priority
  • All generations ranked retirement plans, healthcare, compensation and job security as top benefits
  • Millennials are looking to advance quickly and were more likely to prefer career laddering than Baby Boomers
  • All generations perceive effective communication, a safe work environment, and a respected boss as high importance. 
  • Employees of all ages also reported similar preference when it comes to their organization's philosophy, valuing systems that encourage ideas, recognizing employee contributions, and providing skill development
Stated in an article titled "What Candidates Want To Know About Your Company" on undercoverrecruiter.com, candidates want to build a thorough idea about a company's value and culture ahead of applying for a role. When considering applying to a company, candidates look for things such as organization values and goals, company culture, the customers, the team, and the leadership style. To prevent missing out on potential top talent, it's important to keep social media platforms and websites current and informative, as these are the outlets candidates will be using to research your company.

As you're looking for what a candidate can offer your company, candidates are looking for what your company can offer them. What's important to the candidates you're looking to hire should be reflected in the hiring process to pinpoint those who will benefit your company and also benefit from your company.
